You Are My Anchor Point – Karol Sudolski
By Virginia Fungo

On 19 February, in the spaces of Recontemporary, “You Are My Anchor Point” was inaugurated,
the first solo exhibition of the visual artist Karol Sudolski, produced in collaboration with Seeyousound and open until 12 March.

Crossing the entrance door of the exhibition space you are projected into a different reality, leaving behind the external world, and finding oneself immersed in a new dialectic between inside and outside and between reality and representation. References to everyday life are part of a dreamlike landscape created by the works on display, in which you find yourself moving losing your orientation and instead letting yourself be guided in the fruition by a pleasant feeling of disorientation.

Karol Sudolski, a young creative of Polish origin who now lives in Milan, has never wanted to be an artist but he comes close to being one for what he calls “road accidents”. Including the discovery of photogrammetry, a technique used to scan buildings in architecture, applied instead to the scanning of human bodies, and the errors present in the digitalization of the bodies; the experience with camerAnebbia that brings him closer to the video; the music, through collaborations with L I M (Sofia Gallotti), Mecna, Mahmood. Another “accident” was the ideation of an Instagram filter for Valentino using augmented reality, in fact there are two qr codes that refer to two Instagram filters of augmented reality.

His works are the result of a mix of digital errors, experiments and images derived from the memory of video games and videoclips, fragments of digital memory that come to life in a new form, scenarios that are the meeting point of the various “roads accidents” and the vision of the artist.

The protagonist is the body, at the center of the work together with its deconstruction, through three-dimensional digital scans it’s read from a close-up point of view that highlights the skin with its details and characteristics, thus becoming surface and landscape. Between these images that recur in different dimensions and facets there is always an anchor point, often the face: a fixed and defined point that emerges, while the rest of the image moves and intertwines. Until the anchor point also blurs, reappears, and mixes with the other elements of the video. The movement is intrinsic to the birth of the images, the subjects are in fact in motion (they breathe, move the eyes…) and Sudolski himself moves, contrary to the classical photogrammetry characterized by immobility.

In You Are My Anchor Point an archive of fragmented entities gives life to a paradoxical and intimate scenario, here the anchor point is the barycenter of the moving images and bodies, but also of the visitor who is passing through the dreamlike landscapes of Sudolski: personal space but at the same time background for the emotions of everyone who relates with it.
